Step 2 - Analysis
An analysis is where you break a complex problem into smaller parts so that you understand it better. You will need to look at and analyse previous Festival of Music covers to see what kinds of designs are successful.
Your job in this step is to learn about the language of design. Then, use this technical language in a two paragraph analysis for two cover designs you can find on this website (four paragraphs in total). You will present this to the class as a digital presentation, using Powerpoint/Prezi or similar.
See the rubric for this task under the Assessment tab. This task is due at the end of Week 2, Term 3.

The Elements of Design
The elements of art and design can be used to talk about certain parts of a picture. Take a look at the videos below to better understand these elements. Each video talks about different elements but there are lots of different lists and ideas about elements of design. You can read brief descriptions here or you can read more in-depth and look at some examples here.
Analysis
Have a thorough look through the Cover Examples section of this website. You'll notice some designs on this website were published on the front of the book, some were published on the back as 'runners up' and some were finalists.
Up until the year 2000, designs were created by the Festival of Music. Since the year 2000, children have designed the covers of every Festival of Music book. You'll notice that before the year 2000, some covers look quite similar when they used the same designer for more than one year.
Your task for this analysis is to choose two designs (from any section of this website, including the student uploads) and discuss what design elements you think are effective/not effective and present these to the class as a presentation. The discussion for each design should be at least two paragraphs.
Use the language of the design elements to help you.
An example of a good sentence (that includes a design element) would be:
"In the Festival of Music 2011 I like the different shapes of the lips and the repetition across the page."
I have used two technical design words in this sentence - shape and repetition.
If you would like to include the pictures below in your presentation, right click on the image and choose the option "Save Image As", save the image in your documents and then insert the saved picture into your presentation.
